{"id":999,"date":"2016-12-20T21:02:04","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T01:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.papaworx.com\/Book\/?page_id=999"},"modified":"2016-12-20T21:02:04","modified_gmt":"2016-12-21T01:02:04","slug":"1-4","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.stuehlingen.online\/Book\/?page_id=999","title":{"rendered":"1-4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"Standard\"> Another important contribution to the scant literature on the Jews of St\u00fchlingen, a series of three articles in the Swiss journal of Jewish genealogy, originates from the pen of the veteran Basel genealogist and lawyer Peter Stein.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Stein, \u201cDie Juden zu St\u00fchlingen und ihre Nachkommen\u201d; Stein, \u201cDie Juden zu St\u00fchlingen und ihre Nachkommen, 2\u201d; Stein, \u201cDie Juden zu St\u00fchlingen und ihre Nachkommen: Nachtrag.\u201d\"><a id=\"body_ftn19\" href=\"#ftn19\">19<\/a><\/span><\/span> This series is particularly useful since it meticulously itemizes internal Jewish sources relevant for the elucidation of St\u00fchlingen\u2019s Jewish history. Unfortunately, Stein explored only a small sample of extant external, primary sources available at the Karlsruhe archives, insufficient to resolve the complex family structure of the St\u00fchlingen community or to trace the chronology of and reasons for certain events. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> The same author, in collaboration with Werner L. Frank, has written an article on the early history of the famed Guggenheim family.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"T5\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Frank and Stein, \u201cDigging for the Copper-Guggenheim\u2019s Origin.\u201d\"><a id=\"body_ftn20\" href=\"#ftn20\">20<\/a><\/span><\/span> Unfortunately, their family tree falls short, since it is not based on sufficient primary data.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> But a Jewish community does not exist in a vacuum. Its situation and development cannot be understood without adequate geographic and historical background about the town hosting it. A little volume by a local historian entitled <span class=\"T8\">Geschichte der Stadt und der vormaligen Landgrafschaft St\u00fchlingen<\/span>, which I found in a second-hand book store in Freiburg, Germany, proved extremely useful.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Brandeck, Geschichte der Stadt.\"><a id=\"body_ftn21\" href=\"#ftn21\">21<\/a><\/span><\/span> Another St\u00fchlingen author, Gustav H\u00e4usler, wrote a history of his town in 1966, thus providing additional perspectives.<\/span><span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"> <span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: H\u00e4usler, St\u00fchlingen:Vergangenheit und Gegenwart.\"><a id=\"body_ftn22\" href=\"#ftn22\">22<\/a><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> Today most surviving administrative, financial, and court records are stored in the archives of Karlsruhe and Donaueschingen; the rest largely fell victim to St\u00fchlingen&#8217;s town-hall fires in 1850 and 1904. As chance would have it, a few valuable manuscripts concerning the Jews survived the second fire because Samuel Pletscher,<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Marti-Weissenbach, \u201cSamuel Pletscher.\u201d\"><a id=\"body_ftn23\" href=\"#ftn23\">23<\/a><\/span><\/span> a journalist and writer from the adjacent Swiss township of Schleitheim, had borrowed them from the town archive in the 1890s as resources for a newspaper article.
