Mayor, town manager, and council requested Count Prosper\t\t\tFerdinand in 1701 not to renew the protection letter in order to\t\t\trelieve the town of the Jewish burden. The Jews had abused the common\t\t\tpastures excessively, letting all kind of sick cattle graze and\t\t\tinfect others.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\"\t\t\t\ttitle=\"Footnote: Brandeck, Geschichte der Stadt und der vormaligen Landgrafschaft St\u00fchlingen, 89\u201390. \"><a\t\t\t\t\thref=\"#ftn1\" id=\"body_ftn1\">1<\/a><\/span><\/span>\t<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">Thus Brandeck, in his town history, reflects the\t\tresidents\u2019 vestigial perception of their Jewish denizens, a perception\t\tthat survived in the population\u2019s collective subconsciousness for over two hundred years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">\t\tPhysical fights were frequent, both between Jews and between gentiles\t\tand Jews. Sometimes they led to medical consequences. For example, in\t\t1677 Johann Sch\u00f6lderlin wounded Callmele Jew and had to pay 12 fl.\t\tpenalty plus the medical expenses <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4704\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4704]<\/span><\/a>.\t<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">\t\tBy 1624 the town council had already applied to the count to have the\t\tJews banished and to confiscate all their silver <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1576\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1576]<\/span><\/a>.\t\tIn 1682 the town complained that the number of Jews by far exceeded\t\tthe permitted number <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1281\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1281]<\/span><\/a>.\t\tTwo years later, Father Maurus of Ofteringen complained about the\t\tlarge number of Jews in his village [<a href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1342\">1342<\/a>]. A Jewish woman was fined for\t\twashing the laundry in her house <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1342\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1342]<\/span><\/a>.\t\tIn 1722 the entire Jewish population was fined for its apparent lack\t\tof respect while the church bells were rung Saturday night <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3009\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3009]<\/span><\/a>.\t\tThe following year, Faistel (<a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.4.1.1\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.4.1.1<\/span><\/a>)\t\twas fined for working on a Sunday <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3741\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3741]<\/span><\/a>.\t\tA large group of Jewish men were fined for straying from the common\t\troad while welcoming a newly arriving bride groom <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=803\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R803]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\t<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">\t\tSt\u00fchlingen documents indicate a steady\t\tbackground of petty crime perpetrated by Jews during the second half\t\tof the seventeenth century. Every single one of the sixty-seven\t\tcommercially active Jews between 1650 and 1700 received at least one\t\tfine or punishment or was sued. Marumb (<a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.3\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.3<\/span><\/a>),\t\tthe most successful merchant, was by far the most frequently\t\tcastigated, with thirty-six violations recorded. He seems to have owed\t\this success, at least partially, to sharp business practices.
