The seventeenth-century minutes of the <em>Heidingsfeld<\/em> Jewish community lists a variety of special taxes implemented to deal with the situation.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Heidingsfeld was a Jewish community outside of W\u00fcrzburg. For the minutes, see Wolf, \u201cThe First Pinkes of Heidingsfeld,\u201d 000. &lt;pg #?&gt;\"><a id=\"body_ftn13\" href=\"#ftn13\">13<\/a><\/span><\/span> There was a monthly tax to support the paupers\u2019 hostel (<em>Hekdesh<\/em>), the obligatory meal and lodging vouchers (<em>Pletten<\/em>) for transients, and finally voluntary contributions to celebrate special occasions. Part of Jewish community charity was motivated by the <em>Halacha<\/em>, part out of the awareness that this fate could easily await any one of them. Taking care of their own poor was also necessary to deflect recriminations by the authorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> St\u00fchlingen\u2019s Jews also had to deal with this problem of vagrants. They were warned <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2729\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2729]<\/span><\/a> against and fined <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=899\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R899]<\/span><\/a> for giving refuge to transient Jews, and hospitality could have much more serious consequences. In 1737 Schmuli Weyl sheltered four transients over <em>Shavuot<\/em> (Pentecost), who were subsequently caught committing theft in Schaffhausen. Schmuli found himself charged and imprisoned <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2459\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2459]<\/span><\/a> for having hosted the criminals.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Rosenthal, Heimatgeschichte der badischen Juden, 177.\"><a id=\"body_ftn14\" href=\"#ftn14\">14<\/a><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> A statute from 1632 was quite explicit regarding the hosting of vagrants and hinted at one of the reasons behind this policy: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\">&#8220;The local Jews are not to house poor foreign Jews for longer than eight or ten days. Rich foreign Jews are to enter an agreement with the dominion.(!)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">Against special recognition, this period could be extended somewhat:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\">Decision: The foreign Jews are to pay half a florin per week and are to leave and search shelter elsewhere within a fortnight. If the Jews cannot pay, the fee is to be paid by those who took them into their households without permission. &#8211; As none of those foreign Jews have any property, the fee was gracefully reduced by the Landgrave. <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2065\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2065]<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> Jews not under protection could be evicted, even if they were employed in a household <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3192\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3192]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Footnote\"><span class=\"footnodeNumber\"><a id=\"ftn12\" class=\"Footnote_20_Symbol\" href=\"#body_ftn12\">12<\/a><\/span>Heidingsfeld was a Jewish community outside of W\u00fcrzburg.
