Schmuli (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2.1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2.1.2<\/span><\/a>) led an uneventful life under protection and died in his sixties. In 1691 his widow Berundi was accorded a series of claims in lieu of her dowry, because Schmuli\u2019s estate contained insufficient cash <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=967\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R967]<\/span><\/a>. According to <em>Halacha<\/em>, a widow can only claim the dowry she brought into her marriage plus the amount pledged (<em><span class=\"T8\">mohar<\/span><\/em>) in the marriage contract (<em><span class=\"T8\">ketubah<\/span><\/em>) from her husband\u2019s estate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> Schmuli had a son Abraham (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2.1.2.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2.1.2.2<\/span><\/a>), whose wife Model and daughter Judit were fined for conducting a verbal fight <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=867\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R867]<\/span><\/a>. Abraham\u2019s son Isac (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2.1.2.2.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2.1.2.2.1<\/span><\/a>) was married to a \u2018Sprinz\u2019 <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2354\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2354]<\/span><\/a>. By 1730 Meir&#8217;s grandson Daniel (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2.1.1.3.1.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2.1.1.3.1.1<\/span><\/a>) was living in Wangen on Lake Constance <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2253\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2253]<\/span><\/a>. Daniel\u2019s brother Isac moved to Worblingen in 1743 <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3446\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3446]<\/span><\/a>. Abraham\u2019s grandson Hewen (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2.1.2.2.1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2.1.2.2.1.2<\/span><\/a>) went to live in Lengnau <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3459\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3459]<\/span><\/a>. Eventually, the name Bickert changed to Picard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Weil<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"><a href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/ft.php?id=14&amp;ge=m\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/Stuehlingen\/img\/Tree.gif\" \/><\/a>By far the largest clan in St\u00fchlingen eventually answered to the family name Weil (Weyl, Weihl, Weyhl, Wiell, Wieller, Wyler).<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: In the register of Jews for both Lengnau and Endingen this family name appeared consistently as \u201cWeil\u201d in 1761 and \u201cWyler\u201d in 1774.\"><a id=\"body_ftn9\" href=\"#ftn9\">9<\/a><\/span><\/span> The first explicit mention of this name appeared in 1649 <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1771\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1771]<\/span><\/a>, but members of this family have been recorded as far back as 1610,<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Samuel Pletscher Collection, Schuldurkunde, St\u00fchlingen 1610. \"><a id=\"body_ftn10\" href=\"#ftn10\">10<\/a><\/span><\/span> when Leman (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=R1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R1<\/span><\/a>) together with Phal (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2<\/span><\/a>), Marum (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=Z16\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">Z16<\/span><\/a>), Phrom (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.3\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.3<\/span><\/a>), and Meyerle (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=C2.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">C2.1<\/span><\/a>) cosigned a document acknowledging a debt of 1000 guilders to Count Maximilian von Pappenheim. We found at least five distinct branches of the Weil clan. Within the scope of this investigation, these branches cannot be traced back to a single joint forebear, although naming patterns suggest that a common ancestor with the name Leman (Juda) or Marumb (Meir) lived in the vicinity many decades earlier, and many of his descendants eventually found their way to St\u00fchlingen, Tiengen, Lengnau, Endingen, and Gailingen. According to tradition,<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: L\u00f6wenstein, Nathanael Weil, 000. &lt;pg #?&gt; \"><a id=\"body_ftn11\" href=\"#ftn11\">11<\/a><\/span><\/span> the name Weil is derived from \u201cWeil der Stadt,\u201d a little town situated between Pforzheim and Stuttgart. Leman had a brother <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2696\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2696]<\/span><\/a> Cost (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=R2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R2<\/span><\/a>). A\u00a0Marum (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=Z16\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">Z16<\/span><\/a>), a cosignatory of the early letter of debt to the count, died in 1612 <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1457\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1457]<\/span><\/a>. Generic heirs were mentioned later but not specified. It is possible that this Marum was the father of Leman and Cost, but we have no explicit evidence to support such a claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> Cost lived to a ripe old age. He was married <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3799\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3799]<\/span><\/a> but apparently had no children; no heirs were ever mentioned. Leman had three sons: J\u00e4ggelin (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=R1.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R1.1<\/span><\/a>), who was married to Schachmannn\u2019s (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G2<\/span><\/a>) widow, Isac (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=R1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R1.2<\/span><\/a>), and Abraham (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=R1.3\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R1.3<\/span><\/a>). Abraham\u2019s daughter was married in Haigerloch <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4469\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4469]<\/span><\/a>, possibly to one Mayr Schnerff <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3712\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3712]<\/span><\/a>. Isac moved to Lengnau and sold his house in St\u00fchlingen <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4161\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4161]<\/span><\/a>; Abraham had no sons.
