Religious services in St\u00fchlingen presumably differed little from that of other Jewish communities in Germany, taking the form of communal Torah reading and prayers \u201cin the traditional manner\u201d (nusach ashkenaz).55<\/a><\/span><\/span> But unfortunately decorum was not always maintained: Mausche Mayer got into a quarrel about a debt with Leib (G1.4.1<\/span><\/a>) in the synagogue and beat him bloody. Leib\u2019s wife is fined for beating Mausche in the synagogue\u201d [R3616]<\/span><\/a>. Another time, \u201cSalomon Weil senior (R1.1.2<\/a>) is fined for unlawfully shouting in the synagogue\u201d [R2367]<\/span><\/a>, and \u201cMenckhe Bloch (C2.1.2)<\/span><\/a> is fined for bad conduct in the synagogue\u201d [R1147]<\/span><\/a>. Finally, as of January 1, 1745, the Jews of St\u00fchlingen lost their synagogue [R31]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

But social excesses could also be associated with celebrations outside the synagogue: \u201cLemann (R1)<\/span><\/a>, Jecoff (G1)<\/span><\/a>, Sannel (C1)<\/span><\/a>, and Meierle (C2.1)<\/span><\/a> are fined for throwing stones in windows, breaking drinking glasses, and other wantonness at the circumcision of J\u00e4gli Jew\u2019s (C2)<\/span><\/a> son\u201d [R1563]<\/span><\/a>. Weddings too were an occasion for hijinks:<\/span><\/p>\n

The following Jews are fined for leaving the com\u00admon [over\u00adland] road when wel\u00adco\u00adming a new\u00adly ar\u00adri\u00adving groom: Sa\u00adla\u00admon Weyl, Ma\u00adrum\u2019s son (S1.2.1.1)<\/span><\/a>, Fai\u00adsel Gu\u00adgen\u00adheimb (G1.4.1.1)<\/span><\/span><\/a>, Isac \u00a0Bloch (C2.1.4.2.1)<\/span><\/a>, Marx Bloch (C2.1.4.2.3)<\/span><\/a>, Jo\u00adnas Gu\u00adgen\u00adheimb (G1.4.1.2)<\/span><\/span><\/a>, Ab\u00adra\u00adham Bloch (C2.1.2.1.1.3)<\/span><\/a>, Isac Bo\u00adlack, See\u00adlig\u00admann Gu\u00adgen\u00adheimb (G1.4.2.1.2)<\/span><\/a>, Ma\u00adrum Gu\u00adgen\u00adheimb (G1.2.2.3.1)<\/span><\/a>, Moy\u00adses Bloch (C2.1.2.1.1.2)<\/span><\/a>, Schmu\u00adle Weyl (R1.1.1.2)<\/span><\/span><\/a> as their lea\u00adder, Ja\u00adcob Weyl) (W3.3)<\/span><\/a> same. Marum Weyl (W1.3)<\/span><\/a> is fined for a riot at the wedding of his youngest daughter Ella last Saturday while the bells were rung for Ave Maria and the Poor Souls. [R2187]<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The only surviving physical witness of Jewish religious observation in St\u00fchlingen is the cushion cover of the Eliah chair for the circumcision of Lehemann Weil\u2019s (W1.3.2<\/span><\/a>) son. It is the property of the Swiss National Museum and exhibited in the Jewish Museum of Switzerland in Basel.56<\/a><\/span><\/span> It measures about twenty-six by twenty-seven inches and is beautifully dyed and embroidered with the traditional blessings. The picture in the central medallion suggests a Purim scene, with the Hebrew letters \u05ea\u05d1”\u05e5 corresponding to the year 492 in the short notation. Although the order of numerals does not correspond to the standard Hebrew notation, it matches the Yiddish diction (units before decimals). The circumcision, therefore, probably took place on March 11, 1732, and the child, therefore, was born on March 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

The medallion is surrounded by a Hebrew inscription: \u201cThis belongs to Jehudah, son of the leader and guide, Parnas and chairman, the honourable Maharam St\u00fchlingen [Weil], and his [!Lehmann\u2019s] wife Reichel, daughter of the leader and guide, the honourable Jacob Lengnau [Gugenheim], Switzerland.\u201d Given the proliferation of honorifics in the prose, the cover was probably created by Maharam\u2019s wife. In the explanation accompanying the exhibit the word \u2018\u05de\u05d4\u05e8\u05dd<\/span>\u2019 (Maharam) had been misread as \u2018\u05de\u05d4\u05e8”\u05dd<\/span>\u2019 (abbreviation for \u201cOur Teacher the Rabbi Meir\u201d). The cemetery register of Lengnau and Endingen lists only one son of Jehuda (Lehmann) Weil \u2013 Izchak (January. 29, 1738 \u2013 February. 19, 1823).57<\/a><\/span><\/span> Since his circumcision would not have fallen on Purim, this cushion cover was probably not intended for him. Judah (Lehmann) Weil died on June 28, 1788, aged seventy-nine, and his wife Rahel (Rei\u00adchel) on November. 9, 1783, both in Lengnau.58<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
