{"id":1755,"date":"2016-12-25T16:39:56","date_gmt":"2016-12-25T20:39:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.papaworx.com\/Book\/?page_id=1755"},"modified":"2016-12-25T16:39:56","modified_gmt":"2016-12-25T20:39:56","slug":"9-5","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.stuehlingen.online\/Book\/?page_id=1755","title":{"rendered":"9-5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> The first mention of a St\u00fchlingen rabbi was less than auspicious: <span class=\"T5\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"T18\">David Jew of Eberfingen and Marx Jew, the rabbi of St\u00fchlingen, have beaten each other bloody<\/span>\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1545\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1545]<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> St\u00fchlingen does not appear to have had its own rabbi between 1660 and 1680. In 1660 the resolution of a quarrel between Jacob N\u00f6wenburger (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=Z8\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">Z8<\/span><\/a>) and Calmeli (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.2.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.2.1<\/span><\/a>) regarding an issue of family law had to be deferred \u201cuntil a rabbi comes to town\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3799\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3799]<\/span><\/a>. Joneli (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.4\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.4<\/span><\/a>) had to pay a fine in 1660 because he had brought his problem before Rabbi Matheis in Tiengen <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3841\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3841]<\/span><\/a>. Apparently it was not unusual for small, rural Jewish communities in Swabia to flourish without a resident rabbi.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Johler, Geschichte, Landes- und Orts-Kunde, 136.\"><a id=\"body_ftn28\" href=\"#ftn28\">28<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> But occasionally a rabbi was employed in St\u00fchlingen. In 1684 a \u201cJew Lidtmann, hitherto the rabbi in St\u00fchlingen, sues Schmulin Calmelin\u2019s son [<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.2.2.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.2.2.1<\/span><\/a>] for the return of a credit of 30 Reichstaler plus interest\u2026\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1354\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1354]<\/span><\/a>. A local rabbi also was present in 1729 <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2204\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2204]<\/span><\/a>. In 1741 the community dismissed Rabbi Falck Levi, two years before the community was abolished, \u201cbecause his services were no longer required\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1168\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1168]<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In several cases, authorities and secular courts required the assistance of community elders or other knowledgeable Jews to interpret specific aspects of Jewish laws, mainly family law <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1009\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1009]<\/span><\/a>. Occasionally, even external rabbis from as far away as Frankfurt had to be consulted to solve particularly intractable problems [<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2253\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R2253<\/span><\/a>, <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=90\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R90<\/span><\/a>]. These findings are compatible with the conclusion of Augusta Wedler-Steinberg that a single common rabbi served the Jewish communities of Tiengen, St\u00fchlingen, Endingen, and Lengnau during most of the seventeenth century and may have resided in any of these places at one time or another.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Weldler-Steinberg and Guggenheim-Gr\u00fcnberg, Geschichte der Juden in der Schweiz, 144.\"><a id=\"body_ftn29\" href=\"#ftn29\">29<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In contrast to the rabbi, cantors (Vorsinger) and beadles (Schulklopfer) seemed to have had a more permanent role in the St\u00fchlingen community:<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Elbogen, Der j\u00fcdische Gottesdienst, 482\u201392.\"><a id=\"body_ftn30\" href=\"#ftn30\">30<\/a><\/span><\/span> \u201cBeer Jew from Prague, currently the cantor of the local Jews, is fined 10 fl. for attempting to defraud a man at the Zurzach fair\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3765\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3765]<\/span><\/a>.
