This is not astonishing, given the restricted role permitted to the rabbi by the letters of protection.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: See ch. 5, 000. &lt;pg #?&gt;\"><a id=\"body_ftn22\" href=\"#ftn22\">22<\/a><\/span><\/span> Deprived of his judicial function, a rabbi would preside at weddings and funerals. He was not needed for regular synagogue services, although some rabbis were renowned for their learned expositions on a variety of religious and philosophical topics. We have no documentary evidence that a St\u00fchlingen rabbi ever functioned in the accepted role of a community rabbi typical for the transition period from Middle Ages to the early modern period.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Friedmann, \u201cThe Changing Role of the Community Rabbinate,\u201d 000. &lt;pg #?&gt;\"><a id=\"body_ftn23\" href=\"#ftn23\">23<\/a><\/span><\/span> \u00a0Nor was the St\u00fchlingen rabbi\u2019s function acknowledged by the secular authorities, unlike the case in Burgau.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Ullmann, Nachbarschaft und Konkurrenz, 161\u20136.\"><a id=\"body_ftn24\" href=\"#ftn24\">24<\/a><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> The only explicitly tax-exempt rabbi mentioned was Salomon Bloch, Reb Shlomele, (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=C2.1.4.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">C2.1.4.2<\/span><\/a>).<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: FFA, Judenakte, &lt;Politica?&gt;, 4 I 1, RM, rep. 5, sch.2, June 11, 1717.\"><a id=\"body_ftn25\" href=\"#ftn25\">25<\/a><\/span><\/span> In the Lengnau mohel book (list of ritual circumcisers),<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Kaufmann, \u201cZur Geschichte der Familie Dreyfuss,\u201d 000. &lt;pg #?&gt;\"><a id=\"body_ftn26\" href=\"#ftn26\">26<\/a><\/span><\/span> Salomon is designated as chaver (member) rather than rabbi, indicating that he had only some basic rabbinical qualifications. He appears in St\u00fchlingen records between 1687 <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1441\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1441]<\/span><\/a> and 1734 <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2380\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2380]<\/span><\/a>.
