The Jews respond that according to their letter of\t\t\tprotection, they are allowed to trade in any merchandise except\t\t\tsteel, iron, and salt. Decision: the Jews are obliged to buy the\t\t\tcloth from the local wool weavers <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2297\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2297]<\/span><\/a>.\t<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">\t\tFinancial records reveal yet another insight into the economic reality\t\tof St\u00fchlingen\u2019s Jews. Marum, Jeckhoff&#8217;s son, whom we have identified\t\tearlier as a super businessman, died around 1686. His widow Mergam\t\ttried to carry on the business, but by 1700 she was freed from having\t\tto pay protection because of abject poverty <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4454\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4454]<\/span><\/a>.\t\tThere are two possible explanations: (i) Marum\u2019s business model was\t\tbased on a high degree of leverage and therefore dependent on regular\t\tcash flow. (ii) In 1663 Marum countersigned a 680 fl. loan for his\t\tfather-in-law Marx H\u00f6nlin, called S\u00fcesskind, in Oettingen <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3946\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3946]<\/span><\/a>.\t\tH\u00f6nlin defaulted, and Marum was left with the huge debt <a\t\t\thref=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4023\"\t\t\tclass=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4023]<\/span><\/a>.\t<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">\t\tOverall, the Jews of St\u00fchlingen were quite successful merchants.
