The worst case probably involved organized cattle rustling:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\">Veit Weihl (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=U1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">U1.2)<\/span><\/a> Jew, who has lived in St\u00fchlingen dominion for a while and most recently in Donaueschingen dominion, is sued for payment of 69, 51, and 64 fl. for horses. His protection in Donaueschingen was annulled, and he is on the run. The stables of Jews J\u00e4ckle (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=C2.1.4\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">C2.1.4)<\/span><\/a>, Joseph (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.3.3\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.3.3)<\/span><\/a>, Marumb\u2019s son, and Judele (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=U1.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">U1.1)<\/span><\/a>, Veit\u2019s brother, were \u00a0inspected, and the horses were found. Plaintiffs can get their horses back if they present evidence that \u00a0they are the owners. The wife of Veit Weil had arrived with a little child last night, heading for Lenglau [Lengnau] as he [Veit] had ordered her to go <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1356\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1356]<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> The purchase and sale of stolen goods was not uncommon. The records for the period of 1604 to 1743 show thirteen accusations or convictions for trading in stolen goods. These crimes contravene not only the laws of the land, but knowingly trading in stolen goods is also clearly forbidden by the Halacha.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Cf. Lev. 19:11.\"><a id=\"body_ftn40\" href=\"#ftn40\">40<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In 1629 \u201cDavidt Jew of Eberfingen (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=Z1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">Z1<\/span><\/a>) is fined for buying stolen items\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1689\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1689]<\/span><\/a>. Later on \u201cLew (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.4.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.4.1<\/span><\/a>) Jew at St\u00fchlingen is fined 6 fl. for buying stolen cloth from some soldiers\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=54\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R54]<\/span><\/a>, and the same \u201cLew of St\u00fchlingen is fined 10 pounds for buying stolen property\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4690\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4690]<\/span><\/a>. Stolen goods were also taken as security on loans: \u201cJ\u00e4cklein Lehman\u2019s son-in-law in Horheim (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=M1.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">M1.1)<\/span><\/a> has taken stolen clothes as a pawn and is fined 10 pounds\u201d <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4785\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4785]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In the beginning, Jews could easily buy and sell land and buildings, particularly in the villages and surrounding country. At times, they made a good profit. Things changed in the 1670s due to restrictions imposed on holding land. For example, in 1677 Sandel (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=S1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">S1.2<\/span><\/a>) bought a meadow for 100 fl. and had to resell it for 60 fl. <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4926\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4926]<\/span><\/a>. From about 1730 on, most real-estate transactions required a gentile resident to represent the Jewish buyer or seller <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4975\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4975]<\/span><\/a>; the reasons for this practice are not apparent. Jews were allowed to own houses in St\u00fchlingen, and often family members shared a building <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=804\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R804]<\/span><\/a>. Occasionally, a Jew did share a building with a gentile neighbour <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=716\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R716]<\/span><\/a>, but each purchase of a Jewish residence had to be approved by the authorities <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2322\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2322]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Footnote\"><span class=\"footnodeNumber\"><a id=\"ftn40\" class=\"Footnote_20_Symbol\" href=\"#body_ftn40\">40<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Cf.
