Some debtors owed money to as many as eight different merchants: \u201cClaims against Hanns Rebmann called Gussi: J\u00e4ggle Jew (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=C2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">C2<\/span><\/a>) 134 fl., H\u00fcrtzle Jew (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2.1<\/span><\/a>) 60 fl., Meierle Jew (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=C2.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">C2.1<\/span><\/a>) 8 fl., Jecoff Jew (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1<\/span><\/a>) 8 fl., Cost (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=R2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"T12\">R2<\/span><\/span><\/a>) 1 fl., Isaac (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=B1.2.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">B1.2.2<\/span><\/a>) 4 fl. + 3 fl., the heirs of Sannel Jew(<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=C1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">C1<\/span><\/a>) 15 fl., Judele Jew of Ofteringen (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=O4\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"T12\">O4<\/span><\/span><\/a>) 30 fl. + 5 fl. <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1654\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"T12\">[R1654]<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> Claims were also used like cash. In 1684:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\">Meyerlin, Menkhin\u2019s son (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=C2.1.2.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">C2.1.2.1<\/span><\/a>) passed a claim to his sister, who had just married <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=1358\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R1358]<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">Estates were frequently settled in claims as well:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\">\u201cJeckoff (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.2.2.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.2.2.2<\/span><\/a>) has inherited a claim from his father Callmel.&#8221; (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.2.2\">G1.2.2<\/a>)\u201d<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=955\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R955]<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">And similarly: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\">\u201cMarumb (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.3\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.3<\/span><\/a>) and Jonelle (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.4\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.4<\/span><\/a>) Jews, Jeckhoff\u00b4s (G1) sons and heirs, ledger. The following participate in the claim: the heirs of Schmul (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.2<\/span><\/a>) Jew (22 fl.), Marumb (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.3\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.3<\/span><\/a>) Jew, Jonas Jew, and the heirs of Josephle (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=G1.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">G1.1<\/span><\/a>) Jew (38 fl. each) <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2112\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\"><span class=\"T27\">[R2112]<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"T27\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">But credits did not have to be heartless. The St\u00fchlingen protocols record a deposition:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\">Christa F\u00f6ssler and his wife in Schwaningen are grateful to Jew Sandel (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=S1.2\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">S1.2<\/span><\/a>). Since he did not aggressively pursue his interest at their bankruptcy, they were able to keep their farm. As the Jew lost about 150 fl., they assigned him a mortgage of 50 fl. beyond the court settlement <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=3720\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R3720]<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In fact, while the crimes and misdemeanours of Jews occupied the courts quite frequently, not a single accusation of or conviction for usury was among the 622 cases concerning Jews.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> Jews were not only lenders; they also borrowed money for leverage. With the general cash shortage in the country, the major lenders were in the cities: \u201cTreasurer [S\u00e4ckelmeister] Hurter of Schaffhausen claims 202 fl. from J\u00e4gglin Weyl Jew (<a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/tree.php?t=R1.1\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">R1.1)<\/span><\/a> in St\u00fchlingen.
