The second oldest, <em>Prosper Ferdinand Philipp Maria Karl Franz zu F\u00fcrstenberg-St\u00fchlingen<\/em> (1662\u20131704) became, at the age of nineteen, the designated successor to the F\u00fcrstenberg-St\u00fchlingen dominion; however, it would take another four years before he was actually handed the reins. Despite his many virtues, glowingly described in the family historiography,<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Ibid., 52.\"><a id=\"body_ftn11\" href=\"#ftn11\">11<\/a><\/span><\/span> he seemed to have had difficulties in obtaining a military position appropriate to his station.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Mauerer, S\u00fcdwestdeutscher Reichsadel, 195.\"><a id=\"body_ftn12\" href=\"#ftn12\">12<\/a><\/span><\/span> His mother, the widow <em>Magdalena von Bernhausen F\u00fcrstenberg<\/em>, travelled to the elector of Bavaria to plead on behalf of her son.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: M\u00fcnch, Geschichte des Hauses F\u00fcrstenberg, 54.\"><a id=\"body_ftn13\" href=\"#ftn13\">13<\/a><\/span><\/span> Eventually, a \u201cdignified\u201d military post was found for him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In 1690 <em>Prosper Ferdinand<\/em> married the sixteen-year-old countess <em>Anna Sophia Eusebia von K\u00f6nigsegg und Rothenfels<\/em> (1674\u20131727). Military career, \u00a0gambling, and marriage severely taxed the already strained wealth of the F\u00fcrstenberg-St\u00fchlingen family \u2013 and therefore loaded another financial burden on their subjects.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Mauerer, S\u00fcdwestdeutscher Reichsadel, 199, 200, 214.\"><a id=\"body_ftn14\" href=\"#ftn14\">14<\/a><\/span><\/span> <em>Prosper Ferdinand<\/em> served valiantly in a variety of wars and thus had little time to look after the affairs of his county. While commanding a Swabian regiment during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701\u201314)<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Schnettger, Der spanische Erbfolgekrieg, 000.&lt;pg #?&gt;\"><a id=\"body_ftn15\" href=\"#ftn15\">15<\/a><\/span><\/span> in the second siege of <em>Landau,<\/em> he was killed<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Mauerer, S\u00fcdwestdeutscher Reichsadel Im 17. Und 18. Jahrhunder: Geld, Reputation, Karriere: Das Haus F\u00fcrstenberg. p. 339\"><a id=\"body_ftn16\" href=\"#ftn16\">16<\/a><\/span><\/span> on November 21, 1704 by a twenty-four pound French cannonball that hit his coach.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: M\u00fcnch, Geschichte des Hauses F\u00fcrstenberg, 62.\"><a id=\"body_ftn17\" href=\"#ftn17\">17<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> The unfortunate widow <em>Anna Sophie<\/em> was left with eight children to raise; the youngest, <em>Ludwig August Egon Johann Maria<\/em>, was born almost three months after his father\u2019s passing. Six children survived childhood, and one, <em>Maria Josepha<\/em>, died in her late teens.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Stoyan, \u201cEine WWW-Personendatenbank,\u201d Pid= 31000297.\"><a id=\"body_ftn18\" href=\"#ftn18\">18<\/a><\/span><\/span> As the eldest son, <em>Joseph Wilhelm Ernst<\/em> (1699\u20131762) was <em>Prosper Ferdinand\u2019s<\/em> designated successor. His father\u2019s only surviving brother, <em>Anton Maria Friedrich<\/em>, an official in the Catholic Church, and <em>Froben Ferdinand<\/em>, a distant uncle from the Messkirch branch and a high functionary in the imperial administration, joined <em>Anna Sophia<\/em> as his guardians. This guardianship arrangement and the educational plans for young <em>Joseph Wilhelm Ernst<\/em> were soon challenged by Prince <em>Anton Egon of F\u00fcrstenberg-Heiligenberg<\/em>,<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Mauerer, S\u00fcdwestdeutscher Reichsadel, 343.\"><a id=\"body_ftn19\" href=\"#ftn19\">19<\/a><\/span><\/span> from the third branch of the F\u00fcrstenberg clan. The young count <em>Joseph Wilhelm Ernst<\/em> started his education in the Jesuit college of St. Hieronymi in the Bavarian town of Dillingen.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Ibid., 345.\"><a id=\"body_ftn20\" href=\"#ftn20\">20<\/a><\/span><\/span> He was supported by a personal tutor and a few personal servants. After some travel, he studied philosophy in Strasbourg and law in Utrecht. Having completed his formal studies, he returned to St\u00fchlingen through Belgium.
