His role in the battle of <em>Rheinfelden<\/em> (1638) led to critical recriminations.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Warlich, \u201cF\u00fcrstenberg-M\u00f6\u00dfkirch [F\u00fcrstenberger].\u201d\"><a id=\"body_ftn4\" href=\"#ftn4\">4<\/a><\/span><\/span> The next calamity arose as an aftershock of <em>Konrad von Pappenheim\u2019s<\/em> original takeover of the St\u00fchlingen title and left its copious marks in Austrian legal history as \u201cThe Pappenheim Succession\u201d (<em>Der Pappenheim\u2019sche Erbstreit<\/em>)<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: GLA, 72\/3961; M\u00fcnch, Geschichte des Hauses F\u00fcrstenberg, 35.\"><a id=\"body_ftn5\" href=\"#ftn5\">5<\/a><\/span><\/span> \u2013 the House of F\u00fcrstenberg vs. the imperial court. This issue of succession created further tensions between the three F\u00fcrstenberg branches and cost <em>Friedrich Rudolf<\/em> another 75,000 fl.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Tumb\u00fclt, Das F\u00fcrstentum F\u00fcrstenberg, 175.\"><a id=\"body_ftn6\" href=\"#ftn6\">6<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In 1648, during the final confrontation of the Thirty Years\u2019 War, <em>Friedrich Rudolf<\/em> had been ordered to aid in the defence of Prague. When the city fell to the Swedes under <em>K\u00f6nigsmark<\/em>,<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Wilson, The Thirty Years War, 744.\"><a id=\"body_ftn7\" href=\"#ftn7\">7<\/a><\/span><\/span> <em>Friedrich Rudolf<\/em> was captured by the plundering Swedish troops. He was stripped of all money and valuables, and taken hostage; in the end he had to be ransomed for 4000 fl.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: M\u00fcnch, Geschichte des Hauses F\u00fcrstenberg, 43.\"><a id=\"body_ftn8\" href=\"#ftn8\">8<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"><em> Friedrich Rudolf<\/em> died in 1655 while sojourning in <em>Da<span class=\"T15\">\u010d<\/span>ice<\/em>, Moravia, most likely of tuberculosis. At the time, his son and heir Count <em>Maximilian Franz<\/em> was only twenty-one years old. It took him yet another 85,000 fl. and fourteen years to settle finally the Pappenheim affair. This expenditure further added to the cumulative debts of the family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"><em> Maximilian Franz<\/em> married <em>Maria Magdalena von Bernhausen<\/em> (~1638\u20131702). They had seven children, of whom two died in infancy and one in childhood. Despite being the ruler of F\u00fcrstenberg-St\u00fchlingen, <em>Maximilian Franz<\/em> spent most of his time at the imperial court in Vienna as courtier, treasurer, and later colonel of the imperial guards;<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Tumb\u00fclt, Das F\u00fcrstentum F\u00fcrstenberg, 177.\"><a id=\"body_ftn9\" href=\"#ftn9\">9<\/a><\/span><\/span> thus, he had to maintain suitable households both in St\u00fchlingen and in Vienna. During the Austrian war against the Turks in 1664, he served as colonel of the Swabian troops. Although he was promised a pension, it was not paid until after his death and only after appeals by his heirs.
