Cry Havoc and Let Slip the Dogs of War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> It is commonly taught that the Thirty Years\u2019 War lasted from 1618 to 1648, though many historians will claim 1609 to 1660.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Steinberg, The \u201cThirty Years War\u201d.\"><a id=\"body_ftn1\" href=\"#ftn1\">1<\/a><\/span><\/span> However long it lasted, it appears that the war touched the lives of St\u00fchlingen Jews mainly between 1632 and 1640. We know that in February 1633 Samuel (Schmol) ben Jacob was required to deliver grain to the troops on behalf of the village of Eberfingen <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2793\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2793]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\"> In the fall of that year, the Bavarian troops under Johann Count of Aldringen and the Spanish army under G\u00f3mez Su\u00e1rez de Figueroa y C\u00f3rdoba, Duke of Feria, con&shy;ver&shy;ged on St\u00fchlingen with the intent of passing the winter there.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Du Jarrys de la Roche, Der Dreissigj\u00e4hrige Krieg, 296.\"><a id=\"body_ftn2\" href=\"#ftn2\">2<\/a><\/span><\/span> The armies lived off the land and plundered both Jews and gentiles. According to the legend, some terrified Jews fled into the steep, wooded slope south of St\u00fchlingen and hid in caves,<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Brandeck, Geschichte der Stadt, 123.\"><a id=\"body_ftn3\" href=\"#ftn3\">3<\/a><\/span><\/span> which are still called \u201cJews\u2019 Holes\u201d (<em>Judenl\u00f6cher<\/em>) today. Some Jews ran even farther. Samuel (Schmol) ben Jacob Gugenheimb sought refuge in Hallau, Switzerland <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=4069\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R4069]<\/span><\/a>. Some St\u00fchlinger Jews must have fled to join the small Jewish community of Rheineck in the Rhine Valley above Lake Constance. The flow of refugees led the five Swiss Catholic cantons to demand the expulsion of all the Jews from Rheineck.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: StAZ, Eviction Request for Rheineck.\"><a id=\"body_ftn4\" href=\"#ftn4\">4<\/a><\/span><\/span> Notable among the immigrant Jews was \u201cJakob of St\u00fchlingen\u201d who was caught selling stolen jewellery, possibly acquired from plundering soldiers around 1632\/3.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Jakob von St\u00fchlingen, Sale of Stolen Jewellry..\"><a id=\"body_ftn5\" href=\"#ftn5\">5<\/a><\/span><\/span> We now know that \u00a0the person in question was a certain Jekuff Gugenheimb <a class=\"Internet_20_link\" href=\"\/Stuehlingen\/doc.php?d=2534\"><span class=\"Internet_20_link\">[R2534]. <\/span><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">Conversely, St\u00fchlingen provided limited shelter to Jews who had fled from other regions ravaged by war.
