In the Beginning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"Standard\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0; padding-bottom: 0;\">In August 1598 the Jew Isaak of St\u00fchlingen, an old, prosperous merchant and moneylender, was suddenly arrested on adultery charges.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Rosenthal, Heimatgeschichte der badischen Juden, 461.\"><a id=\"body_ftn1\" href=\"#ftn1\">1<\/a><\/span><\/span> Whether the charges were merited or not is unclear, but they found their way into a contemporary satirical Yiddish song, part of a Purim (Carnival) parody collection.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Butzer, H\u00fcttenmeister, and Treue, \u201cIch will euch sagen von einem b\u00f6sen St\u00fcck ...,\u201d 26.\"><a id=\"body_ftn2\" href=\"#ftn2\">2<\/a><\/span><\/span> \u00a0Isaak was thrown into the dungeon of Hewen Castle, residence of the new ruler of St\u00fchlingen, \u201cHereditary Marshal Konrad von Pappenheim.\u201d Isaak had been under protection (Schutzjude) in St\u00fchlingen since the middle of the sixteenth century.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Rosenthal, Heimatgeschichte der badischen Juden, 461.\"><a id=\"body_ftn3\" href=\"#ftn3\">3<\/a><\/span><\/span> He was married and had at least four sons. On September 16 1598 his son Mayer and his brother-in-law wrote a letter to the count, who was himself under house arrest in T\u00fcbingen at the time, complaining about the arrest and arrest conditions. In response, the count produced a letter by Hans Jacob von Opfenburg, his bailiff, stating: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Quote\" style=\"margin-top: 0; padding-top: 0;\">If the Jew claims to be held in a harsh and nasty gaol, he is lying. He occupies a comfortable room like a beautiful chamber, bright with lots of light and a cosy bed; I wouldn\u2019t mind having such a pleasant apartment for myself. He is not sick, as he claims; he is just malingering. He is very deceitful. His meals are brought to him by the Jews from their houses.<span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Rosenthal, \u201cHeimatgeschichte der badischen Juden\u201c 461-2 (Author's translation)\"><a id=\"body_ftn0\" href=\"#ftn0\">4<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"Standard\">Pappenheim also instructed his sheriff to pay special attention that none of Isaak\u2019s property would leave the county. Next, Isaak\u2019s son Mayer, resident in Dortmund, petitioned Emperor Rudolf in Prague, who responded favourably to the plea. But Pappenheim did not give in easily. \u00a0After spending a year in jail, Isaak was ready to accept a fine of 12,000 fl.<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: 1 fl. (florin) ~ 1 ducat ~ 1\/8 oz. gold.\"><a id=\"body_ftn4\" href=\"#ftn4\">5<\/a><\/span><\/span> and swear an oath of truce (Urfehde).<span class=\"Footnote_20_Reference\"><span class=\"Footnote_20_anchor\" title=\"Footnote: Dobozy, The Saxon Mirror, 211 n38.\"><a id=\"body_ftn5\" href=\"#ftn5\">6<\/a><\/span><\/span> He was released on 8,000 fl. bail, which he promptly skipped.
